KYOTOGRAPHIE 2021 _ Erwin Olaf

Concept
Two different photographic stories created in the midst of the pandemic by Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf are exhibited next to each other in the Museum of Kyoto Annex, a Western-style building that was once the bustling Kyoto branch of the Bank of Japan.
The colors of the two spaces-one black, the other white-symbolize the stories the two works tell. “April Fool,” which captures the isolation experienced during the pandemic, conveys the absurdity of our changing world, while “Im Wald” leaves the viewer in awe of nature. Presented together, the contrasting spaces and stories coexist as two sides of the same coin.
The expressing two contrasting time periods by showing this contemporary work inside the historical building gives the viewer a sense of the present intersecting
with history.
